The topic for this year’s Freedom High Scholarship essay contest is “Oakley’s History.” Specifically, we’re asking students to write an entry for the “Oakleypedia” that we want to launch. Each essay should describe a historically significant person, place, or business in Oakley. Oakley founder R. G. Marsh would be a good subject, but so would Enrico Cinquini, the rise and decline of the almond industry, the history of the Oakley Hotel building, the history Spanish and/or Portuguese immigration into Oakley, and how and why Oakley became a city. Essays should cite multiple sources, including photos, interviews, newspaper articles, and books.

If you are a Freedom High senior enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at a four-year college, two-year community college, or vocational school for Fall 2013, you are eligible to win this $500 scholarship, payable to your academic institution.
