Chamber and City Plan Downtown Event

Members of the Oakley Chamber of Commerce are meeting with Lindsey Bruno and Cindy Coelho of the City of Oakley Recreation Division on February 12th to discuss plans for a downtown event on Main Street in September 2013. (The exact date depends in part on the date of Pittsburg’s Seafood Festival, as we want to avoid a conflict.)

The event, which does not yet have a name, will have a water and wine theme. The Oakley Chamber will be in charge of the beer and wine booth. Stay tuned for more details.

Topic for 2013 Freedom High Scholarship: Oakleypedia

Freedom High School (image from City of Oakley site until we take our own photo)

The topic for this year’s Freedom High Scholarship essay contest is “Oakley’s History.” Specifically, we’re asking students to write an entry for the “Oakleypedia” that we want to launch. Each essay should describe a historically significant person, place, or business in Oakley. Oakley founder R. G. Marsh would be a good subject, but so would Enrico Cinquini, the rise and decline of the almond industry, the history of the Oakley Hotel building, the history Spanish and/or Portuguese immigration into Oakley, and how and why Oakley became a city. Essays should cite multiple sources, including photos, interviews, newspaper articles, and books.

If you are a Freedom High senior enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at a four-year college, two-year community college, or vocational school for Fall 2013, you are eligible to win this $500 scholarship, payable to your academic institution.

Larry Jones Doors

Larry Jones was a member of the Oakley Chamber in years past, but had to take some time off due to family issues. He attended the Website Preview Dinner in January and was impressed enough to join again.

Since that time, Larry has become an active member: he attended the February Breakfast with the Mayor and the March Breakfast with the Mayor, and the March Mixer as well.

We’re still waiting for some photos to put on the Larry Jones Doors member profile page, though, because Larry doesn’t have a website. This photo is from the Liftmaster website: Larry is a Liftmaster garage door opener dealer.

La Grande Wedding & Event Center

La Grande Wedding & Event Center Opening

Oakley Chamber President Sallie Goetsch and Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick prepare to cut the ribbon at the LaGrande.

The La Grande Wedding and Event Center joined the Oakley Chamber of Commerce just in time for its ribbon cutting ceremony on January 19th, 2013. Owner “Mother” Theresea Fiore Bragg enlisted her daughters Renee and Tracy and about a dozen grandchildren in managing the event.

With 10 acres of space divided into gardens and water features, as well as a splendid marquee, The La Grande provides Oakley with a welcome space in which to hold large outdoor events, and bridal parties with a palatial location to prepare for their ceremonies. The La Grande also provides complete wedding and event planning services, including marriage ceremonies performed by Theresa herself.

Scruffy Dog Productions

Tom Cusack of Scruffy Dog ProductionsTom Cusack of Scruffy Dog Productions has generously offered to record short videos of Ribbon Cuttings, Groundbreaking Ceremonies, and other Chamber events so we can post them here on our website. (He has also offered to do a video interview for ThePress.net about the website itself.)

Tom named his business for his dog Dixie.

Be sure to get in touch with Tom if you need videos for your business! See some examples on his YouTube channel.

Good Scents Florist

The Oakley Chamber of Commerce is delighted to welcome Good Scents Florists back as a member. (We missed you!) In case you’re not familiar with them, Good Scents is a family-owned business on Main Street in Oakley (just across from the Chamber office, in fact) that receives rave reviews on Yelp for its wedding and Valentine’s bouquets. Steve Harland has been a big winner in some of our mixer raffles, too!

Welcome to the new website

That’s been the consistent response to previews of the new Oakley Chamber of Commerce website, both in private viewings and at our preview dinner on January 29th. We intend to provide this very same “wow!” factor for all of our members and for the many new members that we hope to welcome over the coming year. We’ve worked hard to ensure that our website offers unique and exciting features and opportunities for businesses in Oakley that no other Chamber of Commerce anywhere can provide.

Due to the overwhelming interest and positive feedback we’ve had showing off the site in its development stages we have decided to “go live” with the site a little sooner than planned so everyone can actually have a look while giving the search engines a chance to catch up with all the new pages.

Please note that the site still needs a lot of the content added and edited. For this we will be requesting more information and details from the members in order to complete their member profiles. For some members with established websites and social media links, etc. we have scraped the content together to develop an initial member profile.

Please check your member profile page for accuracy!

If you need to correct any of the information, use our Member Change Request Form. (Can’t figure that out? Email Sallie or Stefan.)

If you don’t see your member profile page, make sure you have paid your 2013 dues! Only paid-up members have profile pages.

If you know of resources that should be added to our resource page, please contact us. This website is continually evolving, so you should check back often to see what’s new. You can sign up to be notified about our upcoming events by email if you want.
