The mission of the Oakley Chamber of Commerce shall be to promote the businesses of Oakley as well as take a leadership role in the overall welfare and growth of the community.

The Oakley Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1985—fourteen years before Oakley became a city—to champion the cause of local businesses. We are a partnership of business and professional people working together. If you do business in Oakley, we invite you to join us in working to improve the economic environment of our community and fostering the development of business growth and prosperity.

Over the years, the Oakley Chamber has sponsored many community events, including the Spring Fling Business Fair, the Almond Fest, and the Citizen of the Year banquet. Our founding presidents include Fred Cline, Ken Graunstadt, and Mike Painter.

The Oakley Chamber is a 501(c)6 California Nonprofit Mutual Benefit Corporation run by a board of directors elected by the membership. The IRS describes this type of organization in the following way:

Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code provides for the exemption of business leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade and professional football leagues, which are not organized for profit and no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.

Chambers of commerce and boards of trade are organizations of the same general type as business leagues. They direct their efforts at promoting the common economic interests of all commercial enterprises in a trade or community, however.

About the Board of Directors

The bylaws of the Oakley Chamber of Commerce permit up to 21 directors, but the number is more usually around 10. To be elected as a director, you must be a member in good standing for at least six months, submit a Director Application Form, and receive a majority of votes at the annual election in November. Directors serve two-year terms.

The board holds its annual planning retreat each January to elect a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. Each board member must also serve on at least one committee to help organize events throughout the year.
